“Did you see?”

        “What?”

        Still at the wheel, back on the road, Tanya pointed first to the right, then to the left. “Less and less land, and more and more water.”

        “It’s so flat everywhere.”

        “Prairies, tall grasses.”

        “Look, in the distance, huge trees.” Lou pointed lazily as the car rolled down the highway.

        With their minds muddled by lack of sleep, the already soaring temperature, and the many doughnuts consumed, Lou and Tanya tried to resist the feeling of sluggishness. Suddenly, Lou exclaimed, “Hey! We’re on a bridge!”

        “Huh?

        “Look, guardrails on both sides, trees, look at the trees!”

        “I don’t get it, we didn’t go up onto anything… but we’re level with the branches?”

        “The bases of the trees are in the water!”

        “Is that it?”

        “We’ve made it to the bayous!”

        “The bayous!”

        All of a sudden, on their left, a vast expanse of shimmering water opened up. Above it flew a flock of birds. Atchafalaya read the road signs. The largest bayou in North America. Lou bent over the map: branches, narrow passages, lacustrine areas.

        “A bayou is neither lake nor river,” recalled Tanya. “It’s insane: fresh water, almost stagnant, but always with a bit of a current. There are endless corridors and bays.”

        “Plenty to get lost in.”

        “That’s what’s so fascinating to everyone.”

        On the 10, the South’s east-west highway, Tanya and Lou passed the natural reserve and continued on to Lafayette. There, unable to stay awake, Tanya chose a city park and lay down on the grass. Lou did the same and, in the heavy heat, fell into a deep sleep.

        “You’ve been in the sun far too long, it’s going to be the death of you!” an old woman exclaimed in English. “I had time to do my shopping, have coffee with my girlfriend, and come back to the park—and you haven’t budged. I decided to wake you up!”

        “Everything’s fine,” said Tanya in a sleepy voice.

        “We didn’t sleep last night,” Lou explained as they stretched their long arms.

        “We wanted to meet some Cajuns,” murmured Tanya.

        “Well, here I am!” said the woman. “Come under the tree and enjoy the shade, I’m not going to stay in the sun like that.”

        “Do you speak French?” Lou asked.

        “Of course!” she proudly replied in French.

        “You remind me of my aunt,” Lou commented.

        “What’s her name?”

        “Émilienne. Émilienne Landry.”

        “I’m a Boudreault. You’ll find people here named Dansereau, Martin, Lejeune, Leblanc, Robichaux, and the like.” 

Lou and Tanya glanced at each other.

        “So it’s true that there are Cajuns and that they speak French.”

        “Cadiens, yes. We’re doing our best not to disappear.”

        Flamboyant with her black hair and bright red lips, Mrs. Boudreault stood straight with her feet well-planted and hands on her hips, smiling pleasantly.

        “Everyone has raved about Cajun cuisine and Cajun music since we’ve been in Louisiana.”

        “Of course. That’s what we do the best. We put our heart into it! That’s why it’s so good. But our kids don’t speak French. And we old folk can’t read it. Because it was the language our parents spoke. We went to school in English when the government banned us from using French.”

        “Wow,” said Tanya. “I thought everyone learned French.”

        “Now they give classes in elementary and high school. But it’s almost impossible to find people to teach French. Ever since it was declared a second language, they’ve been sending us teachers from France.”

        “It’s going to disappear,” said Tanya.

        “Me, I’m going to keep speaking it!” replied the woman as she broke into laughter. “The oldsters decided to get together every week and someone takes on the job of teaching us French. We have discussions, we read a bit, we listen.”

        “Awesome!” exclaimed Tanya.

        “Come see us! You’ll get to know a bunch of Cadiens. We like meeting new people.”

        “Uh…” Lou hesitated.

        “I’d love that,” said Tanya. “Where do you meet?”

        “Well, not here. Lafayette brags about being the heart of Cajun country, but there are many more of us in Thibodeaux, where I live. And in Houma, right nearby. You must come. Absolutely. Stay with me! I have a big house, my kids are long gone, and the bedrooms are empty. I’ll serve you my doughnuts.”

        “Fantastic!” answered Tanya.

        “We wanted to see Lafayette,” Lou reminded her.

        “Take your time to walk around here, try the gumbo or the crawfish at the restaurant, before tasting mine—it’s much better! And take the opportunity to go dancing, and then you can come to our house. My husband loves a good chat.”

        Lou sends more signals to Tanya.

        “That’s so generous,” said Tanya. “You’re very special.”

        Lou tried to extricate themself from the situation, but Tanya elbowed them and asked Mrs. Boudreault how to get in touch with her. “I’ll give you my phone number. Come tomorrow. Wait, make it the day after tomorrow! You’ll be able to hear our music at the cultural centre.”

        “Super, we’ll be there, for sure!” replied Tanya.

        Lou turned away, unable to smile.

        Back in the car, a dispute erupted over freedom and respect. Then they took a long walk, Tanya following the length of the main boulevard, Lou wandering aimlessly along the most squalid little streets. When they returned, an agreement settled things: yes to going together to the Cajun group’s French-speaking gathering, and yes to a boat trip on the bayous, even though Tanya was afraid to go and Lou could not at all understand her fear.

        Tanya wanted to meet these grandparents who claimed their identity, even if they couldn’t read and write in their own language. That evening, they met around a big table, and the French teacher encouraged them to talk. Timidly, in their antiquated French, they said something about their life. Then Tanya and Lou were asked to introduce themselves and discuss their plans, in French. The Cajuns listened attentively. Descendants of Acadians, they were “Cadjins,” as they were told to pronounce the word. They asked Tanya numerous questions. “Humankind grows poorer every time a culture disappears,” she said at the end, clearly moved.

        The heartfelt goodbyes went on and on.  Upon leaving, Tanya quietly said, “You can describe all of this to your friend Léo.” Lou, with hands in their pockets, looked at her with a wry smile. They slowly agreed with a nod of the head. They didn’t really want to leave. It had all gone by too fast. They stepped a little further into the shadows to watch the people returning to their cars at a leisurely pace.

        Mrs. Boudreault came out onto the front porch to welcome Lou and Tanya. She told them how happy her husband would be to prepare cocktails for them. Armand joyfully told a great many of stories and served a wide variety of drinks made of alcohol and fruit juices. Tanya listened and asked questions late into the night, while Lou took pictures and sent them to Leïla, who responded and even decided to connect so that she could participate in the discussion.

        “You’re coming to our cabin,” decreed the Boudreaults very early the next morning. “It’s a done deal, no matter how sleepy you are.” Tanya and Lou climbed into their host’s car. Heading south, the road made its way into an area increasingly covered by water, bordered by houses raised on pilings that soon gave way to cabins that were also elevated, in case of flooding. Armand parked the car under the building. Mrs. Boudreault led them up the staircase on the side and opened the door, inviting them to explore the place. She went to the kitchen, prepared their meal, and served the best seafood dish and a delicious dessert garnished with pecans from the trees in their garden. Stories of survival and mutual aid were told during the meal, which lasted quite some time. Everyone was feeling emotional. After a bit, Armand stood and said it was the perfect time for an outing in the bayou. “I’ll wait at the end of the dock.  Bring water and a hat,” he instructed confidently. Lou didn’t hide their happiness: At last, their wish to experience the bayous had been heard!  Exhausted, Tanya still hesitated. Standing in his out-board motorboat, Armand hummed a tune, life jackets under his arm. Lou tried to reassure Tanya and allay her fear of the water. They held her hand, walked down the dock, and helped her into the boat without asking questions.

        Armand left the cove at the end of which sat his cabin. Before them, a vast stretch of water appeared with hundreds of birds flying above it. No trace of human activity. Just trees at the distant horizon. A fish jumped, glistening in the sun. Lou was filled with wonder. Tanya squeezed their hand even harder. Armand hit the throttle. The boat jetted ahead for a good fifteen minutes before branching off to the right. When he approached what looked like the riverbank, Armand slowed down. The boat’s bow began to slice through a floating carpet of succulent plants with delicate mauve and white flowers. Countless insects hid among them, providing abundant food for the birds. Two great blue herons stood at the entry to a bay. They spread their wings and, with one great flap, flew far away. “This place is the definition of opulence,” said Armand.

        “See all those cypress trees? Their root system keeps the riverbanks from eroding. It keeps the earth in place when the waves roll in. All our old homes are raised on cypress pilings since they’re indestructible! The old houses stand up well against hurricanes.”

        He brought the boat close to one of the huge trees.

        “Look at all these bits of wood with the blunt tops sticking out of the water around the trunk. There are at least 20! They’re called the ‘knees.’ Isn’t that nice? They bring food, oxygen, everything the tree needs.”

        “Nature blossoms to the fullest here,” said Tanya.

        “It spawns, it flowers, it bursts its banks. We’re lucky.” 

        Tanya smiled and relaxed a little while still holding Lou’s hand.

        “Not only can the cypress resist water, since it grows in it, but it can also protect itself from all the insects. We make our canoes out of it, and our beds and tools and toys for our kids…”

        The boat crossed another stretch of water and entered a narrow corridor where the foliage met and offered the comfort of shade. Even at a slower speed and getting closer, it was impossible to clearly make out the riverbank. Everything seemed blurry. The Spanish moss, growing profusely on every branch, created the mysterious atmosphere that the bayous are known for. From a distance, the moss resembled tattered curtains the hid what was behind them from view and gave a ghostly appearance to the trees, which stood so erect and grew directly skyward.

        “Disturbing,” muttered Tanya.

        Armand stood carefully, stretched his body, extended his arm, and detached a big handful of Spanish moss and put it in her hands.

        “For decades, we used this to stuff mattresses, and they even filled the seats of the first Fords with it. It’s sold all over the world.” Tanya, surprised and ill at ease, hurried the pass the plant to Lou. They immediately enjoyed the fresh, soft feeling in their palms. Then they spread the stems over their arms and shoulders, making the supple curves dance.

        “It grows without roots! It absorbs the air and light,” explained Armand. “The only thing it needs is to be suspended. It also attaches to electrical wires, signs…”

        “I love it!” exclaimed Lou.

        The plant was plentiful. Its curling strands grew and multiplied, one emerging from the other, to for a solid whole. The bayous’ signature look. Flowing locks that frighten, great veils hanging from the cypress branches… Lou reveled in it. 

        Armand moved the outboard forward a bit. Overcome by the heat and humidity, they all let themselves melt away. Tanya released Lou’s hand. It seemed as if there were no riverbanks at all. And yet the forest surrounded this aquatic environment. The water seemed perfectly still although it flowed into the Gulf of Mexico. Armand raised his arm and pointed out huge spiders on the tree trunks. He stretched, took hold of the tiller, did a U-turn, and motored back to an open area to show them the egrets. The numerous birds flew over the water and came back to roost on the branches above the shoreline. They were easy to spot with their orange beak and immaculate white feathers, elegantly perched on long, thin black legs. Often, a fish jumped, wriggling in the air. “We feel so rich here,” said Armand.

        In the car, which they’d left in a Lafayette parking lot, Lou woke with the first rays of sunlight. They didn’t want to interrupt Tanya’s sleep so they quietly took out their sketchpad and pencils and started to draw. They raised their eyes: Ahead, a big restaurant on Lévesque Street advertised inexpensive jambalaya and gumbos, and Cajun music. An intense urge gripped Lou who was drawing, drawing as fast as possible, because the ideas tumbled about in their head, ideas for many canvases that would speak of people and places. Lou was hot, and sweat ran down their neck. They checked: Tanya was still asleep, her body taking advantage of the shade. Lou carefully got out of the car and sat on the ground, right on the pavement where a slight breeze blew. Automobile traffic hadn’t yet begun, a blessed moment in an urban setting spectacularly occupied by birds. They made rough sketches of fragments, concepts, details that stampeded across the pages. They would return to the bayou, that much was certain. One day. Until then, there were many paintings to be done. Bigger worlds to build.

        Before returning to Lafayette, Tanya and Lou had dangled their feet over the water as they listened to music and admired the landscape from a dock just a few kilometres from the Boudreault’s cabin. So close to the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi Delta. Together one last time. Tanya took Lou back to New Orleans and then continued on her way to find the Mayans.

        Lou took the wheel. It was with a sinking heart that they were leaving Tanya. The decision to drive through the night and take turns sleeping meant that they wouldn’t have to pay for a room somewhere. Tanya had dozed off, slightly drunk. Before leaving Cajun country, she’d wanted to drink some bourbon. “Mmm, it’s too good,” she’d said. “I feel too good.” And then she’d repeated, “You know, roots allow us to journey far. To invent and create the future.”

        It was a beautiful night. The stars twinkled above the smooth, deserted highway that gradually led away from the bayous. Lou thought about what they had just experienced. It is said that you can eat better in Louisiana than you can anywhere else in the United States because Cajun cuisine is available everywhere in the state. Tourists also listen to Cajun and Zydeco music, and musicians from around the world go there because they find living sources of inspiration, unique sounds, and a marginality that delights. It adds a little zest, as spices do. Tanya gently snored. Do dying peoples become the breasts from which the powerful drink?

        Lou turned onto a secondary road and enjoyed following a long curve. It was 3:30 in the morning. Lou turned the radio on. A silky voice announced: “Delta radio.” Then a slow blues came on. They opened the window, and the clammy heat immediately filled the car. The music became one with the space. Tanya smiled in her sleep. A luscious bass accompanied the subtilties of a rippling guitar.

        Lou relished the turning of the wheels, the bends in the road, the smell of the sugar cane fields, the dampness that penetrated the skin, the fatigue that numbed the brain.  “I’ll describe this to Leïla and Léo, too,” they mused. Suddenly, the immense structure spanning the Mississippi appeared in front of them. They lowered their speed as they began the crossing. At the highest point of the bridge, which majestically looked out over the meandering river, Lou held his breath. A glittering New Orleans, perfect and voluptuous, filled the horizon. Lou grabbed the bottle and swallowed the last of the bourbon, which they’d kept to bid farewell to the night.

        Tanya opened an eye. “Don’t forget, Lou…”

        They turned slowly toward their friend.

        “Rivers don’t care about boundaries.”

        “T’as vu ?”

        “Quoi ?”

        Encore au volant, de retour sur la route, Tanya pointe à droite, ensuite à gauche : “De moins en moins de terre et de plus en plus d’eau.”

        “C’est tellement plat partout.”

        “Des prairies, des hautes herbes.”

        “Regarde, au loin, les arbres immenses,” montre mollement Lou, pendant que leur voiture file sur l’autoroute.

        L’esprit embrumé par le manque de sommeil, la chaleur déjà élevée et l’amoncellement de beignets, Lou et Tanya tentent de résister à la lourdeur. Soudain, Lou s’exclame, “Hé ! Nous sommes sur un pont !”

        “Hein ?

        “Regarde, les rambardes de chaque côté, les arbres,

regarde les arbres !

        “Je ne comprends pas, nous n’avons rien monté… on se retrouve à la hauteur des branches ?”

        “Les arbres ont les pieds dans l’eau !”

        “Ça y est ?”

        “Nous voilà dans les bayous !”

        “Les bayous !”

        Sur leur gauche, tout à coup, s’ouvre une vaste etendue d’eau scintillante. Au-dessus plane une volée d’oiseaux. Atchafalaya, annoncent les panneaux routiers. Le plus grand bayou d’Amérique du Nord. Lou se penche sur la carte : des ramifications, des passages étroits, des espaces lacustres.

        “Un bayou, ce n’est ni un lac ni une rivière,” rappelle Tanya. “C’est fou : de l’eau douce, presque stagnante, mais toujours avec un petit courant. On trouve des couloirs, des baies à l’infini.”

        “De quoi s’y perdre.”

        “C’est ce qui fascine tout le monde.”

        Sur la 10, l’autoroute est-ouest du sud, Tanya et Lou dépassent la réserve naturelle et filent jusqu’à Lafayette. Là, incapable de s’empêcher de dormir, Tanya choisit un parc dans la ville et se couche sur l’herbe. Lou imite son geste et tombe dans un sommeil profond, dans la chaleur pesante.

        “Ça fait trop longtemps que vous êtes au soleil, vous allez mourir ! s’exclame une vieille dame, en anglais. J’ai eu le temps de faire mes courses, d’aller prendre un café avec mon amie, et de revenir dans le parc et vous n’aviez pas bougé. J’ai décidé de vous réveiller !”

        “Tout va bien,” affirme Tanya, la voix ensommeillée.

        “On n’a pas dormi la nuit dernière,” explique Lou en étirant ses grands bras.

        “On voulait rencontrer les Cajuns, marmonne Tanya.

        “Me voilà !” lance la dame. “Venez sous l’arbre, pour profiter de l’ombre, moi je ne vais pas rester au soleil comme ça.”

        “Parlez-vous français ?” demande Lou.

        “Bien sûr !” clame-t-elle fièrement, en français.

        — Vous ressemblez à ma tante, remarque Lou.

        — C’est quoi son nom ?

        — Émilienne. Émilienne Landry.

        — Moi, c’est Boudreault. Vous trouverez des Dansereau, Martin, Lejeune, Leblanc, Robichaux, et bien d’autres, ici.” 

        Lou et Tanya se regardent.

        “Donc c’est vrai qu’il y a des Cajuns et qu’ils parlent français.”

        “Des Cadiens. On essaie de ne pas disparaître.

        Flamboyante avec ses cheveux noir de jais et ses lèvres rouge vif, Madame Boudreault se tient droite, bien plantée, les mains sur les hanches, le sourire avenant.

        “Tout le monde vante la cuisine cajun et la musique cajun depuis que nous sommes en Louisiane.

        — C’est sûr. C’est ce qu’on fait de meilleur. On le fait avec notre coeur ! C’est pour ça que c’est si bon. Mais nos enfants ne parlent pas français. Et puis nous, les vieux, on ne sait pas le lire. Parce que c’était la langue de nos parents. Nous sommes allés à l’école en anglais quand le gouvernement nous a interdit le français.

        “Aïe,” dit Tanya. “Je pensais que tout le monde apprenait le français.”

        “Maintenant, ils donnent des cours au primaire et au high school. Mais on trouve presque plus personne pour enseigner le français. Depuis que ça a été déclaré langue seconde, on nous envoie des professeurs de France.”

        “Ça va disparaître,” affirme Tanya.

        “Moi, je continue !” répond la dame en éclatant de rire. Les vieux, on a décidé de se réunir toutes les semaines et quelqu’un se charge de nous apprendre le français. On discute, on lit un peu, on écoute.

        “Génial !” s’exclame Tanya.

        “Venez nous voir ! Vous allez connaître des tas de Cadiens. On aime ça rencontrer du monde.”

        “Euh…” hésite Lou.

“J’adorerais ça,” déclare Tanya. “C’est où ?”

        “Well, c’est pas ici. Lafayette se vante d’être le Coeur du pays cajun, mais nous sommes beaucoup plus nombreux à Thibodeaux où j’habite. Et à Houma, à côté. Vous devez venir. Absolument. Passez donc chez moi ! J’ai une grande maison, mes enfants sont partis depuis longtemps, les chambres sont libres. Je vous ferai manger mes beignets.”

        “Fantastique !” répond Tanya.

        “On voulait visiter Lafayette,” rappelle Lou.

        “Prenez le temps de vous promener, là, allez essayer le gombo ou le crawfish au restaurant, avant de goûter le mien, il est bien meilleur ! Et puis profitez-en pour aller danser et après ça vous viendrez chez nous. Mon mari aime beaucoup jaser.”

        Lou multiplie les signes à Tanya.

        “C’est tellement généreux,” déclare Tanya. “Vous êtes extraordinaire.”

        Lou tente de s’extirper de la situation, mais Tanya lui donne un coup de coude et demande à madame Boudreault comment faire pour la rejoinder, “Je vous laisse mon numéro de téléphone. Venez

        demain ! Après-demain, tiens ! Vous pourrez écouter notre musique au centre culturel.”

        “Super, nous serons là, c’est sûr !” répond Tanya.

        Lou fait demi-tour, incapable de sourire.

        Dans la voiture, ça tourne à la dispute, à propos de la liberté et du respect. S’ensuit une longue marche, Tanya le long du boulevard principal, Lou au hasard des petites rues les plus sordides. Au retour, un pacte règle l’affaire. Oui à la soirée à la Table francophone du groupe cajun, ensemble.

        Et oui à une sortie en bateau dans les bayous, même si Tanya a peur d’y aller et que Lou ne comprend rien à sa crainte.

        Tanya désire les rencontrer, ces grands-parents qui affirment ce qu’ils sont, même s’ils n’arrivent pas à lire et à écrire dans leur langue. À la soirée, ils se rassemblent autour d’une grande table et le professeur de français les encourage à s’exprimer. Timides, dans leur français d’autrefois, ils disent chacun un mot de leur vie. Puis on invite Tanya et Lou à se présenter, à parler de leurs projets, en français. Ils écoutent avec une attention exceptionnelle ces Cajuns. Des Cadjins, comme ils leur disent de prononcer, descendants des Acadiens. Ils posent beaucoup questions à Tanya. “Les humains s’appauvrissent à chaque culture qui disparaît,” déclare-t-elle à la fin, franchement émue.

        Les salutations chaleureuses s’éternisent. En sortant, Tanya glisse doucement : « Tu raconteras tout à ton ami Léo. » Lou, les mains dans les poches, la regarde, sourire en coin. Iel acquiesce lentement, d’un signe de tête. Iel n’a pas vraiment envie de partir. Tout est allé trop vite. Iel se déplace un peu dans l’ombre, pour observer les gens regagner leur voiture sans se presser.

        Madame Boudreault sort sur le perron pour accueillir Lou et Tanya. Elle raconte combien son mari sera heureux de leur préparer un cocktail. Joyeux, Armand multiplie les histoires et les mélanges d’alcool et de jus de fruits. Tanya écoute et questionne jusque tard dans la nuit, Lou prend des photos et les envoie à Leïla, celle-ci répond et décide même de se connecter pour participer à la discussion.

        “Vous venez à notre à chalet,” décrètent les Boudreault, très tôt le lendemain matin. C’est sans appel, malgré le peu de sommeil. Tanya et Lou montent à bord du véhicule de leurs hôtes. Direction sud, la route fraie son chemin dans un territoire de plus en plus envahi par les eaux, bordé de maisons sur pilotis, qui laissent place bientôt à des chalets, aussi juchés en hauteur, en prévision des inondations. Armand gare la voiture sous le bâtiment. Madame Boudreault les précède dans l’escalier lateral et ouvre la porte, les invite à visiter les lieux. Elle file à la cuisine, prépare le repas, sert sa meilleure recette de fruits de mer, ainsi qu’un dessert d’une grande finesse, garni de pacanes provenant des arbres de leur jardin. Des récits de survie et d’entraide émergent de ce repas qui s’étire. L’émotion gagne tout le monde. Au bout d’un moment, Armand se lève et déclare que le temps est parfait pour une excursion dans le bayou. « Je vous attends au bout du quai. Apportez de l’eau et un chapeau », lance-t-il avec assurance.

        Lou ne cache pas sa joie, enfin son envie de bayou entendue !  Fatiguée, Tanya hésite encore. Debout dans son hors-bord, Armand fredonne un air, vestes de sauvetage sous le bras. Lou tente de rassurer Tanya et de neutraliser sa peur de l’eau. Iel lui tient la main, s’avance sur le quai et l’aide à monter à bord, sans poser de questions.

        Armand sort de l’anse au fond de laquelle se trouve son chalet. Devant eux, un vaste plan d’eau apparaît, survolé de centaines d’oiseaux. Aucune trace humaine. Que des arbres dans l’horizon lointain. Un poisson saute, scintilla au soleil. Lou s’émerveille. Tanya serre sa main encore plus fort. Armand pousse à fond le moteur. L’embarcation fonce à vive allure pendant une bonne quinzaine de minutes, avant de bifurquer vers la droite. Lorsqu’il s’approche de ce qui semble la rive, Armand ralentit. La proue du navire commence à fendre un tapis flottant de plantes grasses aux délicates fleurs mauves et blanc. D’innombrables insects s’y cachent et fournissent une nourriture abondante aux oiseaux. Deux grands hérons occupent l’entrée d’une baie. Ils déploient leurs ailes et, d’un seul battement ample, se propulsent très loin. “C’est l’opulence, ici,” déclare Armand.

        “Voyez tous ces cyprès ? Leur système racinaire empêche les rives de s’éroder. Ça maintient le pays en place quand la vague déferle. Toutes nos demeures anciennes sont élevées sur des piliers de cyprès, ils sont inusables ! Les vieilles maisons résistent bien aux ouragans.”

        Il approche l’embarcation de l’un de ces grands arbres.

        “Regardez tous ces bouts de bois à la tête arrondie qui sortent de l’eau autour du tronc. Il y en a bien une vingtaine ! On les appelle les knees. C’est beau, non ? Ils apportent la nourriture, l’oxygène, et tout ce dont l’arbre a besoin.”

        “La nature s’épanouit à fond ici,” glisse Tanya.

        “Elle pond, elle fleurit, elle déborde. Nous sommes chanceux.” Tanya sourit, se détend un peu, tient toujours la main de Lou.

        “Non seulement le cyprès résiste à l’eau, puisqu’il grandit dedans, mais il se défend aussi contre tous les insectes. On a fabriqué nos pirogues avec ça, nos lits, nos outils, les jouets de nos enfants…”

        Le navire traverse un autre plan d’eau. Il s’engage ensuite dans un couloir étroit où les feuillages se rejoignent et produisent une ombre bienfaisante. Même à Vitesse réduite, et en se rapprochant, on n’arrive pas à distinguer clairement la rive. Tout semble flou. La mousse espagnole, si généreuse sur chaque branche, crée cette atmosphere mystérieuse qu’on connaît aux bayous. De loin, elle ressemble à des lambeaux de rideaux qui empêchent de voir ce qui se trouve derrière et donnent aux arbres, pourtant si droits, pleinement élancés vers le ciel, des airs fantomatiques.

        “Inquiétant,” marmonne Tanya.

        Armand se lève avec précaution, étire son corps, allonge le bras, décroche un grand pan de mousse espagnole et la dépose dans ses mains.

        “On s’en est servi pendant des décennies comme bourre de matelas et on en a rempli les sièges des premières Ford T. On en vend partout dans le monde. Tanya, surprise et mal à l’aise, s’empresse de passer la plante. Le contact frais et doux au creux de ses paumes plait tout de suite à Lou. Iel étend ensuite les tiges sur ses bras et ses épaules, fait danser les courbes souples.

        “Elle pousse sans racines ! Elle s’abreuve de l’air et de la lumière,” explique Armand. “La seule chose dont ellea besoin, c’est d’être suspendue. Elle s’accroche aussi aux fils électriques, aux panneaux…”

        “J’adore !” s’exclame Lou.

        La plante abonde. Ses brins courbés se multiplient, émergent les uns des autres, et forment un ensemble solide. La signature visuelle des bayous. Des chevelures à faire peur, ces grands voiles pendus aux branches des cyprès… Lou exulte. 

        Armand fait avancer encore un peu le hors-bord. Gagné par la chaleur et la moiteur, chacun se laisse fondre. Tanya détache sa main. Les berges ne semblent pas exister. Pourtant, la forêt entoure ce milieu aquatique. L’eau ne semble pas bouger, alors qu’elle se jette dans le golfe du Mexique. Armand lève le bras, pointe du doigt des araignées géantes sur les troncs d’arbre. Il s’étire, reprend la barre, fait demi-tour, revient dans une zone dégagée pour montrer les aigrettes. Elles volent au-dessus des eaux et retournent se poser, nombreuses, sur les branches au-dessus de la rive, bien visibles, avec leur bec orange et leur plumage blanc immaculé, élégamment perchées sur de longues et fines pattes noires. Souvent, un poisson saute, frétillant. “On se sent tellement riche ici”, glisse Armand.

        Dans la voiture, garée dans un stationnement de Lafayette, Lou s’éveille aux premiers rayons de soleil. Iel ne veut pas troubler le sommeil de Tanya. Iel sort doucement ses crayons et son carnet pour se mettre à esquisser. Iel lève les yeux : devant, un grand restaurant de la rue Lévesque annonce jambalaya et gombos à petits prix et musique cajun. Un emportement fiévreux saisit Lou qui dessine, dessine le plus rapidement possible, parce que les idées déboulent dans sa tête, de nombreuses toiles, qui disent les lieux et les gens. Lou a chaud, la sueur coule dans son cou, iel vérifie : Tanya dort toujours, son corps profite de l’ombre. Lou s’extirpe délicatement de la voiture et s’assoit par terre, directement sur le bitume, là où souffle une petite brise. La circulation automobile n’a même pas commencé, moment béni d’un espace urbain qu’occupent glorieusement les oiseaux. Iel ébauche des fragments, des concepts, des détails qui prennent forme en bousculade. Iel retournera dans le bayou, c’est sûr. Un jour. D’ici là,

        iel a de nombreuses toiles à façonner. Des mondes plus larges à forger.

        Avant de revenir à Lafayette, Tanya et Lou avaient écouté de la musique et admiré le paysage, sur un quai, à quelques kilomètres à peine du chalet des Boudreault, les pieds pendants au-dessus de l’eau. Si proche du golfe du Mexique. Delta du Mississippi. Une dernière fois ensemble. Tanya ramenait Lou à La Nouvelle-Orléans, et poursuivait ensuite sa route vers les Mayas.

        Lou a pris le volant. Iel a le coeur serré de quitter Tanya. La décision de rouler pendant la nuit et de dormir tour à tour leur évitait de payer une chambre quelque part. Tanya s’est assoupie, un peu ivre. Avant de quitter le pays cajun, elle avait eu envie de boire du bourbon. Trop bien, disait-elle. 

        Je me sens trop bien. Et puis elle disait de nouveau, “tu sais, des racines, ça permet de s’élancer. D’inventer et de créer le futur.”

        La nuit est belle. Les étoiles brillent au-dessus de la route lisse et déserte qui s’éloigne peu à peu des bayous. Lou songe à ce qu’iel vient de vivre. On affirme en Louisiane pouvoir manger mieux que n’importe où aux États-Unis parce qu’on offre la cuisine cajun partout. On fait aussi entendre la musique cajun et le zydeco aux touristes et les musiciens du monde viennent s’en inspirer, car ils y trouvent des sources vives, des sons uniques, une marginalité qui réjouit. Ça donne du piquant, comme les épices. Tanya ronfle légèrement. Les peuples à l’agonie deviennent-ils les mamelles auxquelles s’abreuvent les puissants ?

        Lou s’engage dans une route secondaire et prend plaisir à suivre un long virage. Trois heures trente du matin. Iel allume le poste. Une voix suave résonne : « Delta radio ». Un blues lent s’élève. Iel ouvre la fenêtre et aussitôt, la chaleur humide envahit la voiture. La musique fait corps avec l’espace. Tanya sourit dans son sommeil. Une basse pulpeuse accompagne les subtilités d’une guitare ondulante.

        Lou savoure les tours de roue, les courbes de son chemin, l’odeur des champs de canne à sucre, la moiteur qui pénètre la peau, la fatigue qui engourdit son cerveau. Je raconterai cela aussi à Leïla et Léo. Soudain, l’immense structure apparaît devant, pour enjamber le Mississippi. Iel laisse ralentir la voiture en entamant la traversée. Au faîte du pont, qui surplombe majestueusement le meander du fleuve, iel suspend son souffle. La Nouvelle-Orléans scintillante emplit l’horizon, parfaite et voluptueuse. Lou attrape la bouteille et avale le reste de bourbon, qu’iel avait gardé pour dire au revoir à la nuit.

        Tanya ouvre un oeil. “N’oublies pas, Lou…”

        Iel se tourne lentement vers son amie.

        “Les fleuves ignorent les frontières.”
