It’s best not to talk about it. That men are lost to the sea is nothing new. That they swallow salty horizons is not funny. We all know we won’t see them on the shore again. So, get rid of his comb, pick up the clothes from the clothesline, and get your church dress ready.

This silence is like the sea, uneasy, deep and thoughtless. I have scars I caress when a smile threatens me with its white eternity.

I am not cooking today. Tomorrow, I’ll find a few signs of his fate along the shore: a sandal, a red cloth he must have raised my way when he could no longer cry for help, a toothbrush, bored in the seaweed, and the sunset of a suspicious paradise. We still haven’t heard from him. “But what for?” said the chief of police. They’re all the same.

No one knows what I do in the afternoons. They’ve made up stories about my madness. The madness of collecting sandals for one and the same foot, of raising flags with scraps of cloth washed ashore. They don’t know that I’m rowdy and sharp when I’m in the church and dance with my arms raised, so God forgives me the urge to say nothing, to keep tabs on the rain as I wait for him. 

I’ve harvested all these farewells and no longer need the other sandal, nor the legs, or the rest of the sea. Only the trail left on the water when my portrait sank.

The sea buries in its own way, quiet and volatile. Blue blood is the land of waves. Aerial sea that invites us to fly over the dead.

Every time, there’s fewer of us women waiting among the coconut trees.  Today I laugh, so maybe that sound that smells like crab reaches you where you are, and you can enter the labyrinth again, right there where the hook disappears only to turn up later, holding a bicycle tire washed to sea. 

Everyone leaves the islands, like a wave that recedes. Suddenly night falls and you hope, again, that your dead return smelling of lemongrass and soap. But no one returns from the waves, unless shrouded in them. 

They tell me to plant snails in the yard, because when grown, the strange sound they emit will be your compass out of fear,  and you’ll come back demanding explanations from the government. But, what a shame to come back to be in bad company again!

Será mejor que no hablemos de eso. Que los hombres se pierdan mar adentro, no es nuevo. Que traguen horizontes salados, no hace gracia. Todas sabemos que no los veremos en la orilla otra vez. Por eso, deshazte de su peine, recoge la ropa del alambre y alista el vestido de la iglesia.

Este silencio es como el mar, inquieto, profundo, y sin pensamiento alguno. Tengo cicatrices que acaricio cuando una sonrisa me amenaza con su eternidad blanca.

No voy a cocinar hoy. Mañana en la orilla encontraré varios mensajes de su suerte: una sandalia, un trapo rojo con el que seguramente me hizo señas cuando ya no podía gritar, un cepillo de dientes aburrido entre las algas y el atardecer de un paraíso sospechoso. Nunca supimos de él. ¿Para qué?, nos dijo el comisario, todos son iguales. 

Nadie sabe qué hago por las tardes. Han inventado diversas historias para mi locura. La locura de coleccionar sandalias de un mismo pie o de izar banderas con los restos de las telas que llegan a mi orilla. No saben que soy escabrosa y mordaz cuando estoy en el tabernáculo y bailo con las manos elevadas para que Dios me perdone estas ganas de no decir nada y de esperarlo contando las lluvias.

He recolectado esta cosecha de despedidas y no me hace falta la otra sandalia, ni las piernas, ni el resto del mar, sólo la estela de agua donde se ahogó mi retrato. 

El mar sepulta a su manera, la manera tranquila y volátil. Sangre azul es el territorio de las olas, mar aéreo que invita a volar sobre los muertos.

Cada vez somos menos las mujeres que esperamos bajo los cocoteros. Hoy me río, porque quizá ese sonido con olor a cangrejos llegue hasta donde estés y puedas regresar algún día al lugar del laberinto, allí donde un anzuelo se pierde para regresar sosteniendo la llanta de una bicicleta que llegó hasta el mar.

Todos abandonan las islas como una ola en retroceso, entonces de repente anochece y de nuevo esperas que tus muertos regresen oliendo a limonaria con jabón… pero nadie regresa de la espuma, a menos que la traiga puesta.  

Me dicen que siembre caracoles en el patio, que cuando crezcan un extraño sonido de brújula guiará tu espanto y entonces vendrás pidiendo explicaciones al gobierno. ¡Pero que cosa atroz! ¡Regresar para andar otra vez en malas compañías!
