We all belong to the world, but the world does not belong to each of us to the same degree. The world, the primary world, the common world, folds, unfolds, then folds again on itself. We live in cities and territories as bodies viewed in the terms of globalized discourses about forms of resistance and inclusion. But, being from the Southwestern Caribbean, we are marked by layers of particularity, originality; overlapping layers that merit pause and silence, layers of crisis, layers of history. 

        In November of 2012, the International Court of Justice in the Hague came to a decision on the first case of Nicaragua v. Colombia, ruling that Nicaragua has sovereignty over an expanse of the ocean as large as Switzerland and the Czech Republic combined. I look for these analogies, between the unfathomable space of the ocean and countries that have figured at the center of the historical narrative, so that others can understand the layers of my archipelago. 

        These days I’m finishing a novel about a woman who splits her time between Berlin, in the diaspora, and the island of her birth; it looks at all the angles of a human life, hers, while she tries to strike a balance between two paradigms that seem opposed: the Southwestern Islands of the Caribbean and the centre of Europe. While in Providence Island, the protagonist meets a person of note who offers her a way to achieve her desire to be recognized and accepted in the islands. Against the backdrop of the new litigation between Nicaragua and Colombia, my protagonist wants to belong, get to be part of the elite, that specific and exclusive group of people closest to a diplomatic and legal process full of secrets and accusations. The powerful character, a woman and former governor, asks her to deliver certain sealed documents at the Hague, where the International Court of Justice is going to decide whether Colombia or Nicaragua has sovereignty over the continental shelf that lies under the Archipelago of San Andres, Providence Island, and Santa Catalina. The documents reflect both our rejection and the euphoria we feel toward the place where many of my ancestors and I were born, the place where we face the dilemmas of belonging. 

        I thought of a book about different forms of loss, territorial loss and forgetting in Caribbean culture, about lethargy and idleness, about the losses that happen to the individual body, about children, and the losses of the collective body. The archipelago the protagonist and I are from has lost a lot. A large portion of its maritime territory has been lost in international legal wrangling, its biosphere reserve has been reduced, its connection to nearby shores interrupted. Families, histories, lives, fortunes and possible futures have been lost. The protagonist is, at times, an immigrant who wanders through the parks of Berlin, walks along the Spree, asking herself how to comprehend a city. There is a point when one can tell the time of day by the quality of the light, or recognize the changes in the direction of the wind, the change of a season, the species of birds. There is a point when one can inhabit the present moment and place with a deep historical dimension. Even then, when one can speak the language and has given birth to children on that soil, one might not lose the foreigner status. Moreover, even with all its benefits, absence has its downside.

        Sometimes it seems to me as though being from somewhere is one of the senses, like smell, sight, or intuition, that it can sharpen or contract, and is not equal in everyone. In some collective moments, at certain historical junctures, belonging appears to be critical for survival, for emotional stability, for peace, for war. At other moments, belonging itself becomes the problem. I belong, with that euphoria I mentioned earlier, to that island that is at once spiteful and protective. 

        In the book I am writing, the protagonist leaves the island with a simple mission. Once she’s away, she doesn’t feel the pressure of the island’s clan; she also wants to find out what is in the documents she agreed to transport and deliver. Her curiosity may end up determining whether she can even return to the Caribbean. This exacerbates the confusion she feels about her place of residence; she may have to choose between staying in Europe, accepting and submitting to alienation, or returning to the island, where she’ll be persecuted and harassed by those whose interests she has put at risk. The protagonist and I have the same problem: the diasporic condition accentuates a sensation of autonomy, a certain freedom one does not feel within the territory. 

        At some point, someone from the island will read this. Meanwhile, I can write and enjoy the advantages of being abroad. On the island, there is a trend to put down, exclude, and banish anyone who does not fit in with the mafia that runs the political machine. Being outside. I am outside. If my finances, or spiritual development, depended solely on the island’s structures of power, it’s possible I wouldn’t be able to write anything at all. That may be the reason why we don’t write much; being inside, living ‘ya, pan di likl raak, requires taking precautions that we islanders don’t need when we journey to other lands. You can refer to others, write about their conflicts, tell any version you want of events, even hurt people’s feelings. There is a certain liberty abroad, because it is not the next-door neighbours who are involved. 

        On the other hand, the diaspora dulls the senses. One’s perception of the island becomes more romanticized, less real. The island’s attributes become more beautiful from afar, the solutions to the island’s problems start to seem possible, even easy, the obstacles seem to disappear, and that’s good. But one’s interpretation of reality can fall into the same traps as those of the colonial gaze, where one does not understand the rhythm of life, its complexities, its nuances. One forgets all that, or it is reduced to anecdote. I hate the idea of being a foreigner in the islands. As thus, beyond the joys of life, there’s the tragedy of having one’s life divided, bifurcated; over time, the layers of novelty and forgetting start to overlap. There are ways of being that stay behind, in the interstice, also a place of loss. 

        Overcoming that tragedy, or accepting it, is the only option left to the protagonist in the novel; realizing that to live trying to have the best of both worlds is problematic, frustrating, naïve. One misses some things while devaluing others, the muggy island summers, or the northern winters. The disorder of the Caribbean, or the demands placed on one in the north. The seven hours of difference in the time zones, the hurricane season, fixing up one’s house, the salt that eats away at everything. All that clashes with the seemingly lighter life on the continent, where any pause or delay reveals a tremendous vulnerability; an urban life at the heart of the crisis; a fissure that gets deeper as the days march on.  

        Ah, but anonymity offers its pleasures, and the promise of variety. A Caribbean part wants to know the other worlds that live within– see them, smell them, taste them, outside. Moreover, the reasons to be away, absent, are not small; there’s the search to transcend the limits of an island that is twenty-seven square kilometers, the boundaries of the clan making demands, exerting pressure. Outside the island, you’re just one more person, generic, nameless, from whom no one expects anything. There’s less time, but you walk the streets with more ease; plus there are other Caribbeans, other islands, other cells. 

        The sun is setting now. A few days ago, I was looking at photos from a trip I took two years ago, and I have scattered pebbles I fished out of a river all over my desk. It’s taken me hours to finish this text, and it now seems to me that this could work: I want to be the kind of animal that builds dams wherever it is. I want to make my own island whenever I find myself overseas, while at the same time preparing a spiritual space on the island for an entire continent to fit in it. 

        Perhaps this is what it means to get out of the interstice, to recover and regain the sense of belonging. Perhaps it is, also, simply another form of stubbornness.

Las pérdidas 

Todos pertenecemos al mundo, pero el mundo no nos pertenece de la misma manera a todos. El mundo, el principal mundo, el mundo común, se ha doblado, se desdobla, se vuelve a doblar. Habitamos ciudades y territorios desde cuerpos que se entienden en relación con los lenguajes globalizados sobre las resistencias y las inclusiones. Pero somos del Caribe suroccidental y nos tocan unas capas de particularidad, de originalidad, unas superposiciones que ameritan silencio y detenimiento, capas de crisis, capas de historia.

        En noviembre de 2012 la Corte Internacional de Justicia de La Haya decidió sobre el primer caso Nicaragua v. Colombia, adjudicándole a Nicaragua soberanía sobre una extensión de mar donde podrían caber Suiza y la República Checa. Busco esas analogías entre el mar, ese espacio inabarcable, y los países que están en el centro del relato histórico, para discernir para otros las capas del archipiélago mío. 

        En estos días voy terminando una novela sobre una mujer que vive la mitad del tiempo en la diáspora, entre Berlín y su isla natal, con todos los ángulos de una vida humana, mientras intenta hallar un balance entre esos dos paradigmas en apariencia opuestos, el Caribe suroccidental insular y el centro de Europa. Estando en la isla de Providencia, la mujer del libro se encuentra con un personaje revestido de poder que le ofrece una posible vía para realizar el anhelo que tiene de ser reconocida, de ser aceptada dentro de las islas. En un litigio nuevo entre Nicaragua y Colombia, mi protagonista quiere hacerse pertenecer, hacerse parte de la élite más cercana a un proceso diplomático y jurídico lleno de secretos, exclusiones y señalamientos. El personaje revestido, una ex gobernadora, le pide el favor de entregar ciertos documentos sellados en La Haya, la ciudad donde la Corte Internacional de Justicia va a decidir si Colombia o Nicaragua son soberanos sobre la plataforma continental, sobre una parte del subsuelo del Archipiélago de San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina. El texto lleva una carga que refleja el rechazo y la euforia por el lugar en el que nacimos muchos de mis ancestros y yo, en donde los dilemas de pertenecer se pueden tocar.

        Pensé en un libro sobre las distintas formas de pérdida, las pérdidas territoriales y los olvidos de la cultura caribeña, la flojera, el tiempo ocioso, las pérdidas que ocurren en el cuerpo individual, los hijos, y las pérdidas del cuerpo colectivo. El archipiélago del que somos la protagonista y yo ha perdido mucho. Una gran parte de su territorio marítimo se ha borrado en litigios internacionales, su reserva de biosfera ha sido reducida, su conexión con las costas cercanas, interrumpida. Se han perdido familias, historias, vidas, fortunas, y futuros posibles. La protagonista es, a veces, una inmigrante que divaga por los parques de Berlín, por la rivera del Spree, preguntándose por las formas de absorber las ciudades. Hay un momento en el que se puede leer la hora en la calidad de la luz, o reconocer los cambios en la dirección del viento, los cambios de estación, las especies de aves. Hay un punto en el que se puede habitar el momento y el lugar presentes en relación con una profunda dimensión histórica. Aún así, aunque se hable la lengua y se paran hijos en un suelo, puede no perderse la condición de extranjera, y, encima, todas las bondades de la ausencia tienen su contracara. 

        A veces me parece que ser de un lugar es un sentido, como lo son el olfato, la vista, o la intuición, que puede agudizarse o contraerse, y que no funciona igual para todos. En ciertas colectividades, en ciertas coyunturas de la historia, pertenecer parece ser crítico para la supervivencia, o para la estabilidad emocional, para la paz, para la guerra. En otros momentos, se vuelve el centro del problema en sí mismo. Yo pertenezco, con esa euforia que dije antes, a esa isla que es igual rencorosa y protectora. 

        En el libro, la protagonista se va de las islas con una misión sencilla. Una vez en la distancia, se siente capaz de superar la presión del clan, quiere averiguar el contenido de los documentos que aceptó entregar. Su curiosidad quizá condicione su regreso al Caribe, entonces la confusión con respecto al sitio de residencia se exacerba con las circunstancias; quizá deba escoger entre quedarse en Europa, aceptar y entregarse a un proceso de enajenación, o volver a su isla, en donde será perseguida y acosada por los intereses que ha puesto en riesgo. La protagonista y yo tenemos el mismo problema: que la condición de diáspora acentúa la sensación de autonomía, una cierta libertad que no se percibe dentro del territorio. 

        Alguien leerá esto, pasado un tiempo, alguien de las islas. Yo, mientras tanto, puedo escribir y gozar de la ventaja que es estar afuera. En las islas hay una corriente que relega y expele a todo el que no combine con la mafia en que se ha convertido el ejercicio de la política. Being outside. I am outside. Si mi sustento financiero dependiera (solo) de las estructuras de poder insulares, o mi desarrollo espiritual, quizá no escribiría nada. Esa puede ser una razón para que escribamos poco, porque estar adentro, living ‘ya, pan di likl raak, implica prevenciones que no existen cuando los isleños andamos por los continentes. Se puede aludir a los otros, a los conflictos que tienen, se puede contar cualquier versión de los acontecimientos, y herir la susceptibilidad de alguien. Hay libertad afuera, los vecinos no son los que están implicados.

        Ocurre, sin embargo, que en la diáspora los sentidos no se afinan igual. La mirada sobre las islas se vuelve en exceso romántica, menos real. Se ven más bellas las cosas de las islas desde lejos, las soluciones parecen todas posibles, relativamente fáciles, las limitaciones desaparecen, y eso es bueno; pero las lecturas de la realidad pueden caer en las mismas trampas de las miradas coloniales, cuando no se entiende el ritmo de la vida, sus complicaciones, sus detalles. Eso se olvida, o toma la forma de la anécdota. Me parece aborrecible ser una extranjera en las islas. Entonces, además de la dicha, hay una gran tragedia en la vida que se divide, que se bifurca, en las capas de olvido y de novedad que se van interponiendo con el tiempo. Hay modos de ser que se van quedando en los intersticios que son un lugar de pérdida, también. 

        Resolver esa tragedia, o aceptarla, es lo que le queda a la mujer de esa novela, resolver que el deseo de hacer una vida tomando lo mejor de todos los mundos es problemático, que es frustrante, ingenuo. Se extrañan cosas y se desprecian otras, el clima de vaho del verano insular o el invierno del norte, el desorden del Caribe, las exigencias del norte. Las siete horas de diferencia, las temporadas de huracanes, las reparaciones en casa, la sal que se lo come todo, chocan con la aparente ligereza del mundo continental, cuando el detenimiento revela más bien una vulnerabilidad tremenda en la continentalidad, una vida urbana en el corazón de la crisis, una grieta que se profundiza con el paso de los días. 

        Ah, pero el anonimato ofrece placer, y la variedad. Una parte caribeña quiere conocer los otros mundos que le habitan, verlos y olerlos y probarlos, outside, y hay motivos para la ausencia que no son menores: hay una búsqueda por superar los márgenes de una isla de veintisiete kilómetros cuadrados, los márgenes del clan, que reclama, exige, presiona. Allá afuera somos una más, otra más, una persona genérica, sin nombre ni apellido, de la que nadie esperaría nada. Hay menos tiempo pero se camina mejor por las calles, y hay otros Caribes, otras islas, otras células. 

        Ahora anochece. Hace unos días revisé fotos de un viaje de hace un par de años y tengo regadas por el escritorio las piedritas que recogí en un río. Llevo horas terminando este texto y me parece que esto puede funcionar: quiero ser ese tipo de animal que construye represas en donde esté, afuera hacer mi propia isla, mientras en la isla preparar el espacio espiritual para que quepa todo un continente. 

        Quizás eso es salir del intersticio, es ir reparando las pérdidas, recuperar el ánimo y el sentido de pertenecer. También, quizá sea solo otra forma de terquedad.
